How NSW stamp duty works
NSW stamp duty (officially called transfer duty) is a state tax paid when you buy property. It is calculated on a sliding scale: the higher the purchase price, the higher the rate. Rates range from 1.25% on the first $17,000 up to 5.5% on amounts exceeding $1,212,000. First home buyers may be eligible for full exemptions or partial concessions under the First Home Buyer Assistance Scheme (FHBAS), which can save tens of thousands of dollars.
